This morning we had to drop my car off at the dealer. I thought all of the car problems were over when I traded my old car in, but...the other day when I was backing out of a parking spot, the car shut down. It took a while to get it started back up again. As it turns out, I needed to have the alternator replaced! I hope this isn't an indicator of what is to come...
While we waited for my car, we walked around the mall. The mall hadn't actually opened yet, so we decided to be the first customers at the Disney Store. When you are the first customers, you get to help "unlock the magic." The kids got to unlock the store with a jumbo key. They got a mini key to take as a souvenir.

31 Heroes Project
Tonight the kids and I participated in a fundraising race that the Run Away Run Club hosted to support the 31 Heroes Project (http://www.31heroes.com/). One of the moms from the kids' school is in the run club as well as some of the girls I work out with. The run started at a new Brewery that just opened up; NOVO Brazil Brewing Co. It was just a one-mile run on the streets surrounding the brewery, but we had a fun time. The kids wouldn't let me take any pictures, but one of the girls from the run club took one and sent it to me. Zachary wasn't in the picture because he was running head of us the whole time. Lately Kailani hasn't wanted to run...

APEX Fun Run
Today was the APEX Fun Run at Heritage. Although I was working at Heritage today, I was not able to see Kailani run this year. Luckily, with Jason's work schedule, he is available for things that take place during the day. Kailani ran 45 laps. The maximum amount of laps for pledges is 36, but they let the kids keep running for the full time.
I finish working at 11am on minimum days, so I was able to help out during Zachary's fun run time. Zachary ran 38 laps.
Both kids beat the amount of laps they ran last year. I think the school is on track to surpass last year's donations.

Aloha 5K
Today we ran the Aloha 5K at Mission Bay. Kailani and I ran it last year, but Zachary and Jason joined us this year. Jason and Zachary stayed together and finished in about 40 minutes. Kailani didn't want to run, so we walked and finished in exactly 1 hour.
On our way to the race, we had heard that a little boy went missing while playing at Mission Bay the night before. There was a whole crew of police at the Bay when we arrived for the race. They were given a tip that the little boy was abducted, so they were treating the situation as a crime.
We saw the mom of the little boy and her whole family handing out flyers. She handed us a flyer and asked us to help find her son. It was so sad:(
Unfortunately, shortly after we got home from the race, we heard that they found the little boy's body in the bay; he had drowned. He was with family at the Bay last night while his mom was working. His dad is in the Navy and left for deployment last week. The whole story is heartbreaking.

Broncos Week 3
Today we were up bright and early for week 3 of the Broncos season. Zachary's game was against the Chargers at Mira Mesa HS at 8:30am. The boys did great. Zachary pulled a flag! The final score was 18-6.
Since we had some time in between games today, we made a stop at the Girl Scout Store for a few items for Kailani's new Junior uniform. I don't think I mentioned that Kailani decided to leave Troop 5221 (which she was a part of for 4 years) this year. Kristin started her own troop this year and I agreed to be her co-leader. A few of the girls from our old troop moved over to our new troop; Troop 5135. We now meet twice per month at Heritage Elementary School (convenient). We are looking forward to a great year! Kailani will be a Junior for 2 years and the plan is to hold the bringing ceremony (Juniors to Cadettes) across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
While we were at the Girl Scout Store, we headed next door to the Boy Scout Store!! Zachary decided he wanted to join Cub Scouts this year. Cub Scouts starts in 1st grade. I contacted a local Pack, who meets on Friday nights and we attended the first meeting last night. It was an awards ceremony, so it wasn't that interactive, but Zachary enjoyed seeing some of the different awards the boys can earn. Boy Scouts is so different from Girl Scouts and I know nothing about it! What I did learn is that we are part of a pack (pack 801). Within a Pack there are different Dens. The Dens are the different age groups. Zachary will start off in the Tiger Cub Den. Today we got all of the parts of the uniform (way more expensive than the Girl Scout uniform) and he's ready for his next meeting on October 9. He will start selling popcorn next week. Who wants to buy some?!
Kailani's game was against Eastlake at Olympian HS at 3pm. Eastlake started out tough, but seemed to give up by the second half. Broncos won 44-0.
*Kailani doesn't let me take many pictures anymore:(

A Day in Balboa Park
Today we spent the holiday in Balboa Park. First, we headed to the Museum of Man, which we had never been to before. They had a very nice monster exhibit and a neat Egyptian exhibit. For the 100th anniversary of Balboa Park, they opened up the tower, which is accessible from the Museum of Man. The last time anyone was able to climb the tower was 1935. We went on one of the tours so we could climb the tower. Only ages 6 and older were allowed. Good thing Zachary made the cut! We learned a lot of history about the tower on the way up. The kids were very good and they loved the views of San Diego!
Here is a picture of the tower we climbed. We were only able to access the first opening, which is on the 8th floor. The 9th and 10th floors are not accessible due to safety reasons.

The kids enjoyed looking off the balconies with binoculars.
We had lunch at The Prado and then headed to the Natural History Museum for their monthly family day. The kids did art activities and then we walked around the museum. They just opened up a new Mayan exhibit, so we went through that as well.
It's always fun to spend the day in Balboa Park.

Busy Day of the Harbor
Today we headed downtown to San Diego Harbor for the Olympics Tour to Rio. The kids got to pose for several different photo ops and we all got to meet some real Olympic athletes.
You can see some of our pictures through the following links. Kailani was wearing a green shirt, so some of her pictures didn't come out that great.

As it turned out, the Road to Rio wasn't the only event going on today. We were able to see the Sand Castle competition.
We took a break to have lunch at Anthony's. It was packed. It's unfortunate the the Port of San Diego may not renew the restaurant's 50+ year lease on the harbor. They are considering other restaurant options.
We were also able to participate in the Festival of Sail as well. We got to tour all of the boats that are part of the Maritime Museum as well as several other boats that were in port for the festival. We each had a passport that was stamped on each ship we visited.
We had a great day!
Blake Leeper - Paralymic track and field athlete.
Greg Louganis - Olympic diver
