Maxim

I signed up for a membership at Maxim for the month of June and July to prep for the Spartan in August. I don't go as much as I want to, but I've been dragging myself out of bed to make it to the 6am class a few times a week. We have such a great group. They make it a lot of fun! I hope to be able to continue going even after the summer ends.

Lake Poway

Today while Kailani was at science camp, Zachary and I had breakfast at the Broken Yolk Cafe. After breakfast we headed up to Lake Poway. A few months ago, they placed a statue of Tony Gwynn at the park there. Poway was his home town. Zachary read all of the information about him that was written on the wall. We looked for fish in the lake and played at the park.

 

Beach Day Round 2

Today Kailani started the Sally Ride Science Academy. This is a summer camp offered through UCSD to get girls interested in math and science. I found out about this camp when someone posted in a FB group that spots were being offered free for military families. I jumped on the opportunity! Kailani attended a session on spiny sea creatures in the morning and deep sea adventures in the afternoon.

While Kailani was at camp, Zachary and I met some school friends at Silver Strand Beach. He had a blast playing the water. Today he was digging up sand crabs. I remember doing that when I was a kid. We had a little scare when the kids thought they saw a shark swimming in the water. Some other people in the water said it was a tarp, but we still think it was a shark. We weren't taking any chances...the kids stayed out of the water.

 

New Adventure

For several years now it has been my goal to get a full-time college position. I enjoy teaching online and I want to be able to work from home and do this more than just part time. I have been applying for jobs anytime they are posted. Most times I don't hear anything.
At the end of May I heard back from a school that I had been applying to for several years. They wanted to schedule an interview. I did the first interview and was a little discouraged because I was told that full-time employees were not allowed to work anywhere else. This meant I would have to give up my other college teaching...
I went through with a second interview anyway. The interview was with the director of the teacher's college and 3 of the faculty who work in the department. The interview was through web cam, so I was able to see everyone who was interviewing me. I felt good after the second interview.
A few days later, I received an email from the senior director requesting an interview. I went through the interview over web cam again. She had me participate in several role play situations. At the end of the conversation we had a discussion about salary expectations. At that time I expressed my concern about having to give up my other adjunct teaching positions. She said they do not allow course mentors (the position I was interviewing for) to work outside of the job for at least the first year. I was adamant that with the salary range, I needed to keep the additional teaching. She said she'd think about it. I didn't feel very confident after the interview. I sent the senior director a follow up email to thank her for the interview and to express my interest in the position. I explained to her that I have been working full time for years while teaching online and haven't had an issue. About 2 hours later, I received a call from human resources stating they wanted to move forward with the process.
They contacted my references and the Senior Director called me with an offer on Wednesday.
I will be flying to Salt Lake City for a week in July for training and will officially work from home this year. I am very excited and ready to start this new adventure.
I will be working as a course mentor for children's literature at Western Governors University (https://www.wgu.edu/).

Beach Day

Today Zachary's Cub Scout Pack had a its annual beach day at Silver Strand Beach. It was a much nicer day than last year, so the kids got to go in the water. They swam and played in the sand. Zachary collected lots of sand dollars that had washed up on the beach.

Tonight was Girl Scout night at Petco Park. We each got a green Padres hat for attending. As always, we had a great time...and the Padres won!

End of Padres Camp

Today was the final day of Padres camp for Zachary. He is already talking about next year! During camp today they got a visit from one of the Padres players, Franchy Cordero. The Padres shared some photos, so hopefully I can post a few more later.

Kailani's cheer gym is doing a challenge right now. The team that gets the most boys to come to a tumbling class wins a prize. Tonight, Kailani brought her brother and Sadie brought her brothers. There is one more tumbling class on Sunday, but so far our team is in the lead.

More Summer Fun

While Zachary was at baseball camp, Kailani and I had some fun. Tuesday we spent the day at the beach with Becky and Sadie. The girls swam, boogie boarded, and played in the sand. I got a little too much sun!

On Wednesday, Sadie joined us at our pool for some swim fun. The girls swam for about 2 hours in the pool before they got tired.

Padres Baseball Camp

Today Zachary started Padres baseball camp. He is so excited to be participating in the camp this year. He wanted to sign up last year, but they did not have a camp in our area. This year they brought camp to Chula Vista. The Friar was at the park to greet the kids this morning. He had such a fun day and is looking forward to the rest of the week.

Tonight was girls' night out! We went to see the movie "Rough Night." It wasn't as funny as I was expecting based on the previews, but it was great to get together with the girls.
Drinks at Savoie first...who knew Mondays were $5 martinis?!

Yay Kailani

Kailani has been working really hard at cheer to get her front and back walkovers. During camp last week she was able to do her front walkover a few times on her own. Today during tumbling lessons, so mastered her back walkover. I am so proud of her!

Tony Gwynn 5.5K

Today we participated in the Tony Gwynn 5.5K. We've seen this run before (it's the 3rd year), but for some reason never signed up. The significance of the 5.5K is that Tony Gwynn would always hit the ball between the 5 and 6 position on the field.

The run started and ended at AleSmith Brewery. Jason got a growler and special bottle of beer as part of his race package. We had a good time and plan to do this run again.

Summer Fun

We're having a blast on summer vacation! Kailani attended cheer camp this week. Zachary and I got to spend some time together.
 
 One day Coach Frankie took the girls to McDonald's for lunch and break time.

Zachary had some pool time!

 

We walked the dogs every day. We have to get Rebel used to walking on a leash.

I was able to get some much-needed time in the gym! I have to work hard to get ready for my first Spartan in August.

During cheer practice this week, the moms walked across the street to the Brazilian brewery. I think we're going to make it a regular things. This new strawberry beer is yummy!

 

 The kids had some fun with water in the back yard.

The Disney Store is doing the summer play days again this year. Last year the kids collected a bracelet each week. This summer, they will collect a patch each week that they participate in an activity. This week's activity was related to the new Cars movie. So far the kids have collected 3 patches.
